Gangs of youths have attacked police officers after an anti-racist march, Scotland Yard has said.
Cordons were set up to stop people going up Whitechapel Road, in east London, because officers feared random attacks on members of the public.
The scenes followed a rally, organised by Unite Against Fascism, that attracted several thousand people.
It was organised in response to another rally planned by the far-right English Defence League (EDL) which was called off earlier this week.
A police spokesman said the UAF rally was "well organised and well stewarded" but a group of young men gathered outside the nearby East London Mosque in response to rumours the EDL were planning a protest.
He said: "The group numbered up to 300, who were very volatile. Despite continued excellent attempts by stewards and representatives from the East London Mosque to control the crowds, even placing themselves in danger, there was the risk of serious disorder.
"Police officers were attacked by the crowd at points throughout the afternoon. One member of the public was attacked at random by members of the crowd as those gathered surged up and down the Whitechapel Road.
"In order to prevent injuries to the public and officers, and serious disorder, police withdrew from the immediate area and a series of filter cordons were put in place. The cordons were used to prevent access to parts of Whitechapel Road due to concerted efforts by the crowd to attack people at random."
The cordon was in place for two hours. One person was arrested for assault.
A spokesman for Unite Against Fascism said around 5,000 took part in the march from Stepney to Whitechapel. He said: "I heard there were a few nasty scuffles between local youths and police but certainly the demo was very positive and a really good vibe."

Whitechapel Road, know it well - Shame for anyone trying to get to East London Hospital, with all these demos going on. Funny they ask for Sharia Law, does that mean that the thousands of tourist trap curry houses in Brick Lane, (a few steps north of the tube), will stop selling the excellent Cobra larger. Might interfere with the old profit margins. I guess technically a good muslim shouldn't work in an establishment that sells the demon drink - even to us infidels, just spitting in our curry and giving us rancid chicken doesn't absolve them in the eyes of Allah. Also, isn't there something in the Quran against gambling, (chronic amongst the asian community).
Personally, I am all for Sharia Law amongst the muslims. They, rather generously allow us a certain amount of freedom as expats in their countries as long as we live in gated communities. Perhaps thats what should happen here. Muslims are allowed Sharia Law under the condition that they live in a sectioned off part of London. Nothing heavy, I am not talking Auschwitz here, just exactly what a Christian would expect as an expat in Riyad.

Our media are cowards and seem to want to assist these nutters in bringing in sharia law in this country. Moderate muslims emigrated here to escape that kind of shit and make a better life for themselves and their children. A life they could never have had if they had stayed in the backward, caste ridled, religious dictatorship of their ancestors.
I can only wonder about what is going on in the heads of our political and religious leaders as they watch this and say and do nothing. The extremists are playing the long game and are willing to work to their goal over centuries if thats what it takes, although it would seem they are starting to get impatient.
The people who enforce this shroud of silence in the name political correctness will be the first ones to have their throats cut, and they dont seem to notice or care about what is really going on.
