Compare and Contrast.

The United States Authorities response to today's release of the Lockerbie Bomber, -

"The interests of justice have not been served by this decision," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, the top U.S. justice official, said in a statement.

"There is simply no justification for releasing this convicted terrorist whose actions took the lives of 270 individuals, including 189 Americans."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the White House also expressed dismay. Clinton called the bombing a "heinous crime" and said Washington had lobbied to keep Megrahi behind bars.

"We have continued to communicate our long-standing position to U.K. government officials and Scottish authorities that Megrahi should serve out the entirety of his sentence in Scotland," she said in a statement.

The United States Authorities response to the shooting down of a Iranian airliner by the USS Vincennes in 1988, killing all on board including 66 children, -

...the crew of the Vincennes was awarded Combat Action Ribbons for having actively participated in ground or surface combat, and the captain received the Legion of Merit.

You're right Rab - it's a load of sanctimonious b/shit but it's not only the Americans - Cameron's been at it as well. They're all such liars.

They have a fucking cheek, the US is in no position to preach justice to Scotland.

1) Death penalty
2) Rendition
3) Water Boarding
4) Guantanimo

I'm sure I could go on, just because they lack any sense of compassion does not mean that Scots should abandon your proud tradition.

Scotland should tell Hillary to fuck off.

Moving swiftly through the waters
Cannons blazing as she came
Brought a mighty metal War-Lord
Crashing down in sheets of flame
Sensing victory was nearing
Thinking fortune must have smiled
People started cheering

Hypocrisy is what our government does best... In fact, it's actually the lone endeavor that they ever, let alone continuously, get right.

Can't say I agree with the release, not that it really effects me one way or the other (I'm Scottish but live a long way north of Lockerbie, relatively speaking).

The things that stick in my throat about this:

- Sure, there is a hint of a miscarriage of justice (Private Eye ad passim) but at the end of the day he was at a very lengthy trial and one appeal. If we're going to release people without due course to legal measures we may as well just scrap court system. As well as it's an insult to the original judges. He is a murderer of over 250 people, whether you think he is innocent or guilty that's what his legal status is and forever will be.

- compassion. The old chestnut 'what about compassion for the victims families' (only they can speak for themselves though, and most seem to be against it)

- Most importantly, it makes Scotland, and by extension the UK, seem like a soft touch on criminals (and they don't come more criminal than mass murderers). People like that hacker, Gary somebody, in future will find USA even more unforgiving when it comes to where they serve their sentence and where they are tried. As well as the USA will now (justifiably) turn round and say 'Isn't it a good thing we opened Guantanemo Bay - just look at the heroes welcome that Libyan chap got after serving 2 weeks for each person he killed'

As for governments being hypocrites, isn't that what modern politics is all about, spin and perception over substance?

Anyway, I like reading your blog, I must make an account some day :)

I expect nothing more from a nation that is purly made up from immigrants.
A nation who's greates gift to the world, was the cheeseburger, herpes and an ability that no matter what country you go too, everyone hates you.

Fifteenth best Scottish blog eh? I would imagine that a round of applause is in order then....

You'll have to take my word for it, but I'm currently clapping like a demented seal. - Well done!

What about William Calley who was in charge at the atrocity of Mai Lai only serving 3 years of his sentence. But then they were only Gooks that were killed.

Lincoln County, have you just made up a blogger account to spout shite on any Scottish blog you come across? Do yourself a favour, or favor, and fuck the fuck off.

I can understand how many relatives of the American victims of Lockerbie are feeling right now. I know how I would feel if one of my friends or relatives had been killed in the explosion. Perhaps they do need to think about a)the US bombing of Tripoli & b)the shooting down of the Iranian airplane - it may make themfeel less outraged. However, if Whatsit Whatsit is really innocent why wasn't that evidence produced either at the original trial or at the later appeal? On the other hand, why would a dying man, who has already gained his freedom, bother to lie?
What really sticks in my craw is the fact that he was released under the label of 'compassion' when really it had fuckall to do with compassion & everything to do with oil & trade. Fucking hoons, they just had to lie - as usual.
